ST. PAUL, Minn. – In their final non-conference tune-up before the start of MIAC play, the Macalester College men's soccer team defeated Carthage College 2-0 at Macalester Stadium on a sunny Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore
Jack Muller (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) got the scoring going early for the Scots, scoring in the first five minutes of the game. Teammate
Will Orser (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial) then tacked on a penalty kick goal in the second half to give the team the 2-0 win.
The Scots capitalized on their first chance of the game, as senior
Nick Moore (Georgetown, Mass./Governor's Academy) took a shot that was blocked, but Muller was there to get the ricochet and finished the play to give Macalester an early lead. Muller's goal was the first of his career.
Carthage took over the offense for awhile after Macalester's goal, getting two shots off, requiring goalkeeper
Cade Fink (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) to make a save. In the middle of the half, the Scots had another good opportunity to score, with
Floyd Krom (Naaldwijk, Netherlands/UWC-Costa Rica) breaking away in the box, but he was fouled causing his shot to miss wide left. However, this set up a free kick just outside the box for Macalester, but Orser's shot on the play went high.
The Scots took their 1-0 lead with them into the break, with each team having taken four shots throughout the first half.
Krom continued to apply offensive pressure in the second half, once again finding himself past the Carthage defenders, but a Carthage player came from behind and kicked the ball out before Krom could score. This set up a corner kick, though, where Krom was fouled in the box, giving his team a penalty kick.
Orser burned the goalie on the PK for his first collegiate goal which would put Macalester up 2-0. With the goal, Orser was the seventh different Scot to score so far this season.
Macalester took four more shots in the half, but was unable to convert any more of their chances. The Scots' defense played tough all game, only allowing Carthage to take two shots on goal, both of which were saved by Fink. With the pair of saves, Fink adds to his league-leading total, with 30 saves on the season. This was Fink's third shutout of the year.
Macalester ends the non-conference portion of their season with a 2-2-3 record, tying two ranked opponents and winning their last two contests. The Scots will now look ahead to the MIAC schedule, which begins on Wednesday, September 18
th against #9 Augsburg College. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
