WAVERLY, Iowa – The Macalester College men's soccer team fell in a close match with Wartburg on Friday night, with the Knights coming away with the 2-1 win.
The Scots held a 13-11 edge in shots on the night, getting nine of those 13 shots on net, which is the most of any game so far this season. Senior
Chris Bajek (Fitchburg, Wis./Madison West) led Macalester in shots taking three throughout the game, all being on net.
However, it was senior
Alex Foster (Chicago, Ill./University of Chicago Laboratory Schools) that scored for the Scots. This was Foster's first collegiate goal and it came at an important time, as it tied up the game in the 73
rd minute.
Nick Moore (Georgetown, Mass./Governor's Academy) and
Max Starks (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) were also active offensively for Macalester, each taking two shots.
The first 20 minutes of the game were busy ones, as there were eight different shots, with each team taking four of them. Neither team was able to get any of their first half shots into the back of the net and the game remained tied at zero heading into the break.
The Knights broke the tie in the 59
th minute of the game, taking advantage of a rebound to make it 1-0 in their favor. It was a little over 14 minutes later when Macalester answered with Foster's goal to tie it back up, but this time at one apiece.
Wartburg came through with an additional goal in the 79
th minute to regain the lead, which they would keep for the remaining 11 minutes of the contest. The Scots were able to put together some chances right at the end, taking two shots within the final three minutes, but the Knights were able to hold on to earn the win.
Macalester will take Saturday off, but will be back at home on Sunday, September 8
th to take on non-conference opponent Luther at 2 p.m.
