COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - The Macalester men's soccer team fell 3-2 to Saint John's on Saturday afternoon, for their first conference loss this season. The Scots held a 2-0 lead in the game only to see the Johnnies come back from that deficit, getting the game winner on a penalty kick in the final minutes of the game. Macalester is now 4-3-3 on the season and 2-1 in MIAC play.
The Scots move to 11-9-1 in their all-time series history with Saint John's and fall to below .500 on the road, with a 5-6 record when playing in Collegeville. With the win, the Johnnies remain undefeated in the MIAC and are 6-2 on the season.
Saint John's opened the game putting heavy pressure on the Scots, taking the first five shots in the contest, but goalkeeper
Cade Fink (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) handled all five, knocking away the two that were on goal.
Junior
Floyd Krom (Naaldwijk, Netherlands/UWC-Costa Rica) got things going for Macalester, taking a shot in the 18th minute and then scoring in the 32
nd minute to put the Scots up 1-0. Krom found teammate
Max Starks (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) sprinting up the left sideline. Starks took the pass and challenged the goalie, who made the save, but Krom was there to get the rebound, managing to get a foot on the ball before the Saint John's defender, putting it in the back of the empty net.
This was Krom's first goal of the season and with it he becomes the 10th player for the Scots to score at least one goal on the year.
Macalester kept up the offensive pressure after the goal, taking four more shots in the half, but were not able to score again, leaving the score 1-0 at halftime.
In the second half, senior
Chris Bajek (Fitchburg, Wis./Madison West) scored his fourth goal in the past five games to add to the Scots' lead. Bajek was outside the box on the left side and found the back right of the net putting Macalester up 2-0.
The Johnnies answered Bajek's goal ten minutes later, scoring in the 62
nd minute to cut Macalester's lead in half. They then tacked on another goal less than three minutes later to tie it up.
The offense went back-and-forth after this, but it was the Johnnies who would score after being awarded a penalty kick in the 89th minute of the game. Saint John's Leighton Lommel buried his shot in the bottom right of the goal to give his team the win.
The Scots return to their home field for their next conference matchup, taking on Bethel on Tuesday, October 1st at Macalester Stadium. Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m.
