NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Macalester men's soccer team is now 2-0 in the MIAC season, coming up with a 3-0 road victory over St. Olaf on Saturday afternoon. The Scots had three different players score in the contest and have now had nine different players score at least once this season.
The Macalester offense has been on a tear recently, outscoring their opponents 11-1 in their past four games. With the win, the Scots improve to 13-7-1 in their all-time series history against St. Olaf and have now won the last three matchups with the Oles.
The Scots' defense also had a strong performance, recording their fifth shutout of the season while only allowing three shots on net in the entire 90 minutes. Those three shots were all saved by goalkeeper
Cade Fink (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) who earned his fourth shutout of the season in the contest.
It was senior
Chris Bajek (Fitchburg, Wis./Madison West) who scored what would end up being the game-winner for Macalester, scoring in the third minute of play.
Floyd Krom (Naaldwijk, Netherlands/UWC-Costa Rica) set up the scoring play, taking a pass from Bajek and passing it right back to him in the box, allowing Bajek to lift a shot over the approaching goalie to put the Scots up 1-0.
Bajek has now scored a goal in three of the past four games and leads the Scots in goals and points on the year. This was Krom's first point of the season.
The Scots added another goal before the halftime break when first year
Thomas Dono (Plymouth, Mich./Salem) took a pass from
Webster An and fired a shot over the top of the goalie. This was Dono's first goal of his collegiate career.
In the second half, Dono had a good chance to put Macalester up by three goals, putting a good header on goal in the 73
rd minute, but St. Olaf's Hamza Osman made an impressive save to keep the game within two. Not too much later Osman was tested again, this time by
Max Starks, managing to punch it over the top of the net.
With a little less than four minutes left in the game, senior
Alex Foster (Chicago, Ill./University of Chicago Laboratory Schools) put the game out of reach, taking a pass from Bajek and beating the goalie to put the Scots up 3-0. The goal was Foster's second this season.
Despite only taking three shots on goal, the Oles put some tough pressure on the Scots, holding a 14-11 edge in overall shots. Macalester was efficient, however, with seven of their 11 shots being on goal. St. Olaf especially stepped up their offensive presence within the last 15 minutes, taking six shots, but the Scots held strong for the win.
Macalester will play again next Saturday, the 28
th, when they head up to Collegeville to take on Saint John's at 1 p.m.
