Baseball: Macalester Blasts Seven Homers in Split at UW-Stout

MENOMONIE, Wis. – The Macalester College baseball team went deep seven times while racking up 20 hits and 16 runs combined in a non-conference doubleheader with UW-Stout Thursday afternoon at Nelson Field. The Scots, who lost the first game, 9-6 before winning Game 2, 10-4, are now 16-15 on the season. The Blue Devils are now 14-15.

Macalester took an early lead in the first game, with senior Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) driving in sophomore Jack Sahargun (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tesoro) in the first inning. However, the Scots surrendered seven runs over the next two innings to trail, 7-1. In the top of the third, first year Michael Moreno (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) launched a two-run home run to make the score 7-3. UW-Stout responded with two more runs in the bottom of the third to push the lead back to six, 9-3. Sahargun and sophomore Cooper Jensen (Washington, D.C./The Field School) each drove in runs in the fourth, then Moreno hit his second homer of the day and fourth of the season in the fifth to make the score 9-6. The Scots put two runners on base in the top of the seventh, but UW-Stout retired the final batter to clinch the win.

Low and Moreno had two hits apiece. Moreno is the second Macalester first year to hit two home runs in a game this season, joining Soren Roe (Golden Valley, Minn./The Blake School).

In Game 2, first year Alec Silverman (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) started the fireworks with a solo shot in the top of the third inning for his first collegiate home run. Then in the fourth, senior Sam Goldberg (North Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton), sophomore Zach Fried (Tai Tam, Hong Kong/Hong Kong International School) and senior Jared Abelson each went yard as the lead ballooned to 8-0. Fried hit a three-run blast and Abelson hit a two-run homer. After the Blue Devils scored a run in the fourth and hit a three-run homer of their own in the sixth, Goldberg hit his second home run of the game in the top of the seventh. Junior Alex Bearden (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute Country Day) doubled home Fried in the seventh to make the score 10-4.

Abelson, Goldberg, Fried, Bearden and first year James Crutcher (San Francisco, Calif./Lick-Wilnerding) each had two hits, as the Scots finished with 11 hits as a team. On the mound, sophomore Jake Greenberg (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley) earned his second win of the season, allowing one run on five hits while striking out two without a walk in five innings of work.

Macalester is scheduled to play a conference doubleheader at St. Olaf on Saturday, April 27, beginning at 1:00 p.m. in Northfield, Minn.
