NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team lost twice at St. Olaf, 3-2 and 6-1, in a MIAC doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Mark Almli Field. With the results, the Scots are now 16-17 overall and 7-9 in the conference, while the Oles improve to 21-10, 10-6 MIAC.
In the first game, Macalester scored twice in the top of the first to take an early advantage. First year
Michael Moreno (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) singled to score junior
Carl Francalangia (West Hartford, Conn./The Loomis-Chaffee School), then later came home on an error. St. Olaf tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the third, then took the lead with a run in the fifth. The Scots did not record a hit after the third inning, as the Oles were able to hang on to the one-run lead for the win.
Junior pitcher
Matthew Plisko (Alpharetta, Ga./Pace Academy) went the distance, allowing three runs on seven hits while fanning seven and walking one in six innings. Francalangia had two of Macalester's five hits in the game.
St. Olaf struck first in Game 2, with a run in the bottom of the second and two more in the fourth for a 3-0 lead. A sacrifice fly from first year
Anthony Palma (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) plated senior
Sam Goldberg (North Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) in the fifth to make the score 3-1 Oles. The Scots put runners in scoring position in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, including second and third with one out in the eighth, but were unable to add to their run total. St. Olaf plated a run in the sixth and two more in the eighth for a 6-1 lead.
Francalangia added two more hits to his total on the day, while senior
Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) also recorded a pair of hits in Game 2. Sophomore
Will Madairy (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) allowed three runs on eight hits in four innings of work to take the loss.
Macalester plays another MIAC twinbill on the road at Saint John's on Wednesday, May 1. The first pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. in Collegeville, Minn.
