Baseball: Macalester Splits a Pair of Games at Tucson Invitational

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Macalester College baseball team bounced back after a loss to Arizona Christian University with a 7-6 victory over Concordia-Wisconsin Friday at the Tucson Invitational, held at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Scots even their record at 4-4.

Against Arizona Christian (15-14), an NAIA school, Macalester surrendered nine runs before scoring a run in the top of the fifth inning. Sophomore Jack Sahargun (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tosoro) led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on an error and scored on a single by senior Sam Goldberg (North Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton). That's all the offense the Scots would generate, as the Firestorm went on to win, 13-1. Macalester managed just six hits in seven innings against ACU pitching.

The Scots' bats woke up in time for the second game of the day, as Macalester scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning against Concordia. Senior Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont), first year Alec Silverman (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) and sophomore Sam Rosevear (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) each drove in runs, with Rosevear plating sophomore Leonardo Bucello (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) with a double. After Concordia scored two runs in the top of the second, first year Anthony Palma (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) hit a one-out triple and scored on a grounder by senior Jared Abelson (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) for a 4-2 lead.

The Falcons made it a one-run game with a run in the top of the third. First year Lian Lincoln (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage) led off the bottom of the fifth with a single, then stole second. Low followed with a double to left centerfield to bring home Lincoln for a 5-3 edge. Then in the sixth, Palma scored on an error by the right fielder on a ball hit by Lincoln, with Lincoln coming home on another double by Low to put the Scots on top, 7-3. CUW pushed two runs across in the top of the seventh, then added a run in the eighth to cut the lead to one, 7-6. But first year pitcher Will Moscato (Berkeley, Calif./Berkeley) retired the Falcons in order in the ninth to clinch the win.

Moscato pitched the final four innings, allowing three runs on six hits while walking one and striking out three to earn the save. Sophomore Will Madairy (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) started and struck out nine batters while holding CUW to three runs on five hits and two walks in five innings of work. Low led the Scots offensively with his fourth game with three or more hits this season, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and three runs batted in. Palma was 2-for-3 with a triple, a walk and two runs.

Macalester wraps up its spring trip to Tucson with a doubleheader against Grinnell College on Saturday, Mar. 23. The first game starts at 12:00 p.m. PDT at Field 8 at the Kino Sports Complex.
