TUCSON, Ariz. – The Macalester College baseball team closed out its spring break trip with a 7-0 victory over Grinnell College in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday at the Tucson Invitational, held at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Scots, who lost Game 1 by the score of 6-4, head north with a record of 5-5.
In Game 1, Grinnell scored two runs in the top of the first inning to lead 2-0. In the bottom of the third, first year

Sam Goldberg (North Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton). Macalester took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, with first year
Lian Lincoln (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage) hitting a single to plate junior
Carl Francalangia (West Hartford, Conn./The Loomis-Chaffee School) and Goldberg drawing a bases-loaded walk for a 3-2 edge. Lincoln made it 4-2 with a sacrifice fly in the fifth that brought home sophomore
Leonardo Bucello (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson). But Grinnell broke through in the top of the seventh with four runs, and the Scots were retired in order in the bottom of the inning to end the game.
Goldberg, senior
Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) and first year
Anthony Palma (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) each had two hits in the loss. Senior
Thomas Shogren (Woodbury, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) started and allowed six runs on 10 hits while striking out six and walking two in 6 2/3 innings.
Macalester shook off the loss quickly, scoring three runs in the top of the third inning of Game 2. Goldberg singled to bring home Low, then first year
Zach Fried (Tai Tam, Hong Kong/Hong Kong International School) hit a two-run triple, plating Goldberg and Bucello for a 3-0 lead. The Scots pushed four runs across in the top of the fifth, including a two-run double by Goldberg. A grounder by junior
Alex Bearden (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute Country Day) allowed Goldberg to score, then first year
Jack Hosley (Mount Pleasant, S.C./Academic Magnet) hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Fried and make the score 7-0 Macalester.
Sophomore right-hander
Alex Denzler (New York, N.Y./Trevor Day School) was nearly unhittable in his 5 2/3 innings, allowing just one hit. He did walk seven batters but also struck out four for his first win of the season. Sophomore
Jake Greenberg (Mr. Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley) finished out the sixth, and junior
Jacob Simpson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Berkeley Carroll School) pitched a perfect seventh to wrap up the win. Goldberg led the offense, going 2-for-3 with two runs and three runs batted in. Low and Bucello also had two hits apiece.
The Scots return to action on Wednesday, Mar. 27 with a non-conference game at the University of Northwestern. The first pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. in Roseville, Minn.
