Baseball: Macalester Outscores Northwestern, 10-7

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Macalester College baseball team defeated the University of Northwestern, 10-7 in a non-conference game Wednesday afternoon at Reynolds Field. The Scots improve to 6-5 on the season, while the Eagles fall to 7-6.

Trailing 2-0 after one inning, Macalester pulled even with a two-run homer by Soren Roe (Golden Valley, Minn./The Blake School) in the top of the second. The Eagles responded with two runs in the third and another in the fourth for a 5-2 lead. The Scots scored a run in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly from senior Sam Goldberg (North Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton), then exploded for five runs in the sixth to take an 8-5 advantage. First year Michael Helton (Laguna Beach, Calif./Sage Hill) struck the big blow with a three-run double.

Then in the eighth, senior Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) singled home senior Jared Abelson (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) and later scored on an error to put Macalester on top, 10-5. Northwestern scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth, but the Scots wrapped up their first win following their spring trip to Tucson.

Ten different players had a hit for the Scots, with Helton delivering a pair of hits. Junior Jacob Simpson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Berkeley Carroll School) tossed two scoreless innings of relief and earned the victory. Sophomore Jake Greenberg (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley) also blanked the Eagles over two innings.

Macalester begins MIAC play on Saturday, Mar. 30 against Gustavus Adolphus at home. The conference twinbill is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Nicholson Field.
