ST. PETER, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team split a doubleheader with Gustavus Adolphus to open the MIAC schedule for both teams Sunday afternoon at the Gustie Baseball Field. The Scots, who dropped the first game, 5-3 before winning Game 2, 6-5, are now 7-6 on the season, while the Gusties are 9-5.
In Game 1, solo home runs by senior
Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) and first year
Soren Roe (Golden Valley, Minn./The Blake School) in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively put Macalester on top, 2-0. Junior pitcher
Matthew Plisko (Alpharetta, Ga./Pace Academy) blanked the Gusties on two hits over the first five innings, but Gustavus broke through with three runs on four hits and a walk to lead 3-2. A two-run single by Matt Berkner in the top of the seventh pushed the lead to 5-2. In the bottom of the seventh, Roe blasted his second homer of the game and fourth of the season, and first year
Michael Moreno (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) hit a two-out double. But a strikeout ended the game in favor of Gustavus.
Roe was 3-for-3 with two homers and a double, while Low also had two hits. Plisko allowed three runs on six hits while striking out six and walking three in 5 2/3 innings.
The Scots took the early lead again in the second game, with senior
Sam Goldberg (North Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) hitting a two-run double in the third inning. Then in the fourth, sophomore
Jack Sahargun (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tosoro) hit a solo home run for a 3-0 edge. Gustavus cut into the lead with single runs in the fifth and sixth inning, only to have Macalester score three runs in the bottom of the seventh to lead, 6-2. Two Gustie runs in the eighth, followed by a solo home run by Jack Hanson in the ninth, made the score 6-5 Scots. Still in the ninth, a double put the tying run in scoring position, but Low picked off the runner on second to end the game.
Sophomore
Will Madairy (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) turned in another solid start, holding Gustavus to two runs on four hits while walking three and fanning five in six innings to earn the win. Senior
Zach Anderson (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) recorded the final out for the save.
Macalester continues MIAC play with a conference doubleheader at St. Thomas on Wednesday, April 3. The first pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
