COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - The Macalester men's soccer team battled with Saint John's to a 0-0 tie after two overtimes, but the Johnnies will advance to the semifinals after connecting on four of their penalty kicks in the shootout, while the Scots connected on two.
With the tie, the Scots are now 11-9-2 in their all-time series history with the Johnnies. The shutout was also the team's ninth on the year.
Macalester was efficient in the first half, firing four of their five shots in the half on net, keeping Johnnie goalkeeper Payton Spencer busy. However, Spencer made all four saves to keep the game tied. The Scots' defense held Saint John's offense to only one shot throughout the first 45 minutes.
The Scots continued to outshoot the Johnnies in the second half, holding a 10-4 edge in shots in the frame. This time, though, only one of their shots found their mark with Spencer making the save.
In the final thirty seconds of regulation the Scots had an especially good chance, with junior
Floyd Krom (Naaldwijk, Netherlands/UWC-Costa Rica) finding senior
Nick Moore (Georgetown, Mass./Governor's Academy) in the box, but Moore's shot missed high, keeping the score tied at zero.
The Johnnies had more of the chances in the first overtime, taking three different shots although none of them were on net. The Scots battled back in the second overtime, getting a corner kick in the final seconds. Sophomore
Will Orser (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial) got a header shot off on the play and senior
Tom Ehrsam (Hartland, Wis./Marquette University HS) followed that up with a shot of his own, but it missed just high.
With the game tied, it headed into a shootout. Macalester goalie
Cade Fink (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) opened up the shootout with a diving save, but the Johnnies converted on their final four shots to advance. Sophomores
Danny Peak (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) and
Rohit Shah (Sunnyvale, Calif./Harker School) each connected on their attempts for Macalester.
Krom, Orser, Peak, Moore, and
Chris Bajek (Fitchburg, Wis./Madison West) each took multiple shots for the Scots in the contest, with Orser and Bajek getting multiple shots on goal. Overall Macalester held a 19-9 advantage in shots and a 6-1 edge in shots on goal.
Fink tallied one save in the game, bringing his season total up to 65. He finished the year with a 6-6-5 record and a .802 save percentage, which currently ranks second in the MIAC.
The Scots graduate seven seniors, who leave the program with a 43-22-13 record and four consecutive trips to the MIAC playoff tournament.
