Men’s Soccer: Macalester Clinches Playoff Spot with 4-0 Win over Saint Mary’s

ST. PAUL, Minn. - For the sixth straight year, the Macalester men's soccer team has earned a spot in the MIAC playoff tournament, this time clinching after a 4-0 win over Saint Mary's on Tuesday night. With the win, the Scots improve to 7-5-4 on the year and 5-3-1 in the MIAC. The Cardinals move to slightly below the .500 mark at 8-9 overall and 4-5 in the league.

This was Macalester's sixth straight win over Saint Mary's, remaining a perfect 6-0 against the Cardinals. It also was the fifth time that the Scots defeated Saint Mary's by multiple goals and the second straight year that the Scots won 4-0.

Currently Macalester sits in fourth place in the MIAC, but with one game still left in the regular season schedule, the Scots will have to wait for Saturday's results to see if they will get to host a first-round playoff game, which is reserved for the third and fourth place teams.

Macalester wasted no time in getting their offense going on a chilly night as they took five shots within the first fifteen minutes of the game. It was their sixth shot, however, that was successful as junior Floyd Krom (Naaldwijk, Netherlands/UWC-Costa Rica) finished off a passing sequence from Webster An (Ann Arbor, Mich./Rudolf Steiner School) and Nick Moore (Georgetown, Mass./Governor's Academy) to get Macalester on the board in the 16th minute.

This was Krom's third goal of the season, as he now has eight total points on the year which ranks third-most on the team. The play also marked Moore's fourth assist and An's second.

Macalester kept the offense coming, finishing the half with a 15-4 edge in shots. Sophomore Will Orser (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial) was the next to score for the Scots, putting away a penalty kick in the bottom left of the net in the 40th minute to put the Scots up 2-0 heading into the halftime break. Orser is now 2-2 on penalty kicks this season.

In the second half, Moore continued to contribute to the offense, this time getting a goal of his own in the 52nd minute. The senior capitalized on a pass back to the Saint Mary's goalie, eventually taking it away from the keeper and finding the bottom right of the goal. Moore now has 10 total points on the season, which leads the team.

The Scots did not stop there, as they got one final goal from first year Joey Stern (Chicago, Ill./Francis W. Parker) with 10 minutes left in the game. Stern headed in a pass from teammate Etienne Chenevert (Baton Rouge, La./Baton Rouge Magnet) to make it 4-0.

With Stern's goal, all four classes were represented in the night's goal-scoring, which is the first time that that has happened since a 7-1 win over Coe in the 2014 season.

The Scots did a good job defensively as well only allowing three Cardinal shots to be on net throughout the contest, as Cade Fink (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) dismissed all three to improve to 6-5-4 on the season. Fink split the shutout with first year Ryan Davies (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt), who played the final four minutes of the game.

Macalester wraps up the regular season this weekend, heading to St. Peter to take on Gustavus on Saturday at 1 p.m. Live stat and video links can be found on the schedule page.
