Men’s Soccer: Macalester Edged by St. Thomas on Friday Night

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Macalester men's soccer team fell to St. Thomas 1-0 on Friday night, as the Tommies scored in the 75th minute to earn the win. The Scots are now 6-5-4 on the season and 4-3-1 in the MIAC and St. Thomas improves to 10-3-3 and remain in first place in the league with an 8-1 record.

In the first half, the Tommies held a slight edge in shots (5-4) and goalkeeper Cade Fink (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) tallied four saves. One of the best chances for the Scots in the half was off a free kick right outside the box in the 43rd minute, but the St. Thomas goalie intercepted the cross before Macalester could capitalize.

The Scots were efficient with their shots in the second half, getting three of their four shots to be on net. The Tommies, however, were the ones to score as Halvor Houg finished a scramble in the box to put his team up 1-0 late in the game.

Macalester stepped up their offense after this, taking three shots before the end of the game and putting a lot of pressure on the Tommie defense. St. Thomas held strong, though, defending a last second Scot's corner kick to claim the 1-0 victory.

Seven different Macalester players took a shot in the game, with sophomore Danny Peak (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) firing a team-high two throughout the contest.

Fink finished with six saves throughout the night, as he is currently tied for first in saves in the MIAC with 58, while also ranking second in save percentage (.806).

The Scots will have their last regular season home game of the season on Tuesday, as they host Saint Mary's. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
