Men’s Soccer: Second Half Goal Propels Macalester to 1-0 Win Over Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. - A second half goal from junior Floyd Krom (Naaldwijk, Netherlands/UWC-Costa Rica) helped the Macalester men's soccer team defeat Hamline 1-0 on the road on Wednesday afternoon. The Scots are now 6-4-4 on the season and 4-2-1 in the MIAC. The Pipers drop to 3-7-1 and are 1-4 in conference play.

Macalester added their 17th win against the Pipers in their all-time series history, holding an impressive 17-1-2 record against their Snelling Avenue opponents. With the win, the Scots have now won 11 of their past 12 matchups against Hamline.

The first half featured a lot of offense for the Scots, as they put a lot of pressure on the Hamline defense, holding a 10-2 edge in shots. Six of those 10 shots found their way on goal, but the Piper goalie stopped all six to keep the score tied at zero heading into halftime.

The Macalester offense continued to be active in the second half, but it took until the 79th minute for it to be successful as Krom found the upper right part of the net after taking a pass from sophomore teammate Quinn Frankovsky (Boulder, Colo./Boulder). Max Starks (Green Bay, Wis./Preble), who passed it to Frankovsky, was credited with the second assist.

The goal was Krom's second of the season and he now has six points on the year. Frankovsky and Starks tallied their second assists of the season on the play.

The Scots' defense was able to hold Hamline for the remaining 11 minutes to seal the victory. Overall, Macalester only allowed the Pipers to take five shots in the contest, with only three on net.

Goalkeeper Cade Fink (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) managed to save all three shots that were fired his way to earn his fifth win and second shutout of the year.

The team plays next against St. Thomas on Friday, October 25 at Macalester Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Macalester will then close out the regular season with games against Saint Mary's and Gustavus, with the MIAC tournament starting on November 5. The Scots will need to remain in the top six in the conference to qualify for the tournament.
