ST. PAUL, Minn.- The Macalester College men's soccer team ended the University of St. Thomas's 17-game MIAC unbeaten streak today with a 3-1 win at St. Thomas. With strong play from the Scots seniors, Macalester moved to second in the MIAC behind Gustavus Adolphus.
Senior Clayton Smith (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) scored his sixth and seventh goals of the season to lead both the Scots and the MIAC in goals this season.
Unassisted, Smith scored for the Scots early on in the tenth minute of the game. Just before the halftime whistle, senior Logan Harper (Westwood, Mass./St. Mark's School) scored a long shot into the top right corner of the Tommy goal to send the Scots into half up 2-0. Harper's goal was assisted by junior
Webster An (Ann Harbor, Mich./Rudolf Steiner School), his first of the year.
In the 65th minute, junior Nick Moore (Georgetown, Mass./Governor's Academy) crossed the ball into the box finding Smith's head for the third Macalester goal of the game. Moore's assist was his second of the year.
The Scots conceded a late goal, as the Tommies scored with five minutes left to play. But Macalester's offensive success proved to much for St. Thomas and the Scots won 3-1 to advance to 6-2-2 on the season.
Macalester returns to play away on Wednesday, Oct. 3, away at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa at 7:00 p.m.
