ST. PAUL, Minn.- The Macalester College men's soccer team beat Hamline University 2-0 today in the Scots first MIAC game of the season.
The game remained scoreless in the first half despite the Scots outshooting Hamline 5-2, with three on goal.
With just a minute and seven seconds played into the second half senior
Clayton Smith (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) scored for the Scots, his third of the season, with an assist by junior
Nick Moore (Georgetown, Mass./Governor's Academy). Moore has now assisted on two of the Scots five goals.
Up 1-0 over the Pipers, Macalester doubled their lead only three minutes after their first goal with a strike by sophomore
Floyd Krom (Naaldwijk, Netherlands/UWC-Costa Rica). Krom's goal in the 50th minute was his second of the year and was assisted by senior
Jamel Benhamida (Fairbault, Minn./Shattuck- St. Mary's).
For the remainder of the half the Scots continued to be aggressive on offense, forcing the Piper keeper to make seven saves and shooting an overall 14 shots in the game. Macalester were firm on defense with senior keeper
Colton Wening (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) only having to save two Piper shots on frame. Macalester won 2-0 and are now 3-1-1 on the season and 1-0 in MIAC play.
The Scots return to play away on Saturday, Sept. 15, away at the University of Chicago in Chicago, Ill. at 4:00 p.m.
