Softball: Macalester Is Swept by Augsburg University

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team lost a doubleheader to the Augsburg Auggies today. The Scots are now 2-2 in the MIAC, as they lost 10-5 and 6-4.

In the first game, the Scots were down 3-0 in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Julia Carpenter (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore) bunted for a single to load the bases for Macalester, with first year Audrey Meade (Cedar Hills, Utah/Pleasant Grove) on second and junior Claire O'Connor (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) on third. O'Connor then scored as Carpenter advanced on a wild pitch. Down 3-1, the Scots tied it up as first year Kate Lawhead (Battle Ground, Wash./Prairie) hit a two RBI double, with Carpenter and Meade scoring. Lawhead leads the scots with 15 runs batted in on the season. But the Scots couldn't hold up the Auggies who scored seven more runs, five coming in at the top of the seventh. Macalester responded with two runs in the bottom of the seventh from a RBI double by O'Connor who then scored after Carpenter grounded out to the Auggies short stop. The Scots lost 10-5.

The Scots played a much closer game with Augsburg in the later game of the double header, losing 6-4. In the top of the fourth, Macalester was down 3-1 with their only score coming in the first of a single RBI by senior Morghan Bean (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine). With one out and the bases loaded, the Auggies pitcher walked O'Connor, sophomore Emma Hartmann (St. Paul, Minn/Como Park) and Carpenter for three runs to help the Scots lead 4-3. The Auggies answered with three runs in the top of the sixth to win the game 6-4.

Junior Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) pitched seven innings in the first game with five strikeouts. In the second game, first year Emily Cekander (Rover Forest, Ill./Oak Park River Forest) pitched the entirety of the second game for the first time this year.

The Scots return to action with a double header against the Saint Mary's University on Sunday, April 12 beginning at 3:30 p.m. in Winona, Minn.
