Softball: Macalester Sweeps Concordia in First MIAC Double Header

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team won their first MIAC contest as they beat Concordia College Moorhead in a double header 1-0, 2-0. The Scots are now 8-12 on the season.
 
The first game remained both run-less and hit-less until sophomore Julia Carpenter (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore) singled on a bunt in the bottom of the fourth. However, the score remained 0-0 until the Scots scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. With Carpenter on first, junior pitcher Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) sacrificed bunted allowing Carpenter to advance to second base with first year Kate Lawhead (Battle Ground, Wash./Prairie) up to bat. Lawhead then hit a double to right center field, sending Carpenter to home plate and the only run of the day. Migacz closed out the game in the top of the seventh and ended the first game with nine strike outs.
 
The Scots continued their sweep of the Cobbers as won 2-0 in the second game of the double header. In the bottom of the first, Migacz was on second after she singled to center field and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Lawhead advanced to first after being hit by a pitch and then both batters advanced on a wild pitch. With Lawhead on second and Migacz on third, first year Molly Hurley (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) grounded out to first, allowing Migacz to score for the first run of the game. The Scots then padded their lead in the bottom of the sixth, as first year Audrey Meade (Cedar Hills, Utah/Pleasant Grove) got on base with a single to right field and then stole second base. Senior Morghan Bean (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine) the doubled with Meade scoring.

Migacz pitched all 14 innings on the day and had a total of 17 strike outs in total, with nine in the first and eight in the second. She is also third in batting average for the Scots. Sophomore Carpenter leads the Scots with 22 hits and 12 runs scored.

The Scots return home to a double header against the Augsburg University on Sunday, April 8 beginning at 4:30 p.m. in Minneapolis, Minn.
