Softball: Macalester Loses Close Ones to St. Olaf

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team was swept by the St. Olaf Oles today, losing 4-3 and 5-1 at home.

In the first game, St. Olaf took a 2-0 lead in the first which the Scots answered in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Julie Carpenter (Stensville, Mich./Lakeshore), who was three for four in the first game, hit a double to left field and then advanced on a wild pitch. With the bases loaded, first year Kate Lawhead (Battle Ground, Wash./Prairie) was walked and Carpenter scored the Scots first run.

Down 2-1, the Scots continued to score in the bottom of the second as first year Anya Lindell Paulson (St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park) got on second with a double to center field. Paulson advanced to third on a wild pitch and the Scots evened the game as Carpenter had one of her three hits, as single, to send Paulson home.

Carpenter continued to advance as she stole second base. Then senior Morghan Bean (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine) doubled to left to make the score 3-2. This was Bean's thirteenth double of the year.

The Oles scored two more runs in the third and fifth respectively to end the game 4-3.

Against St. Olaf in the second game, the Oles were up 5-0 until the bottom of the sixth when with Gregorich on first and Bean on second, first year Kennedy Kechely (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) hit a single to advance Bean who scored on a fielding error by the first baseman for the Oles. The Scots were stopped there and lost 5-1.

First year Audrey Meade (Cedar Hills, Utah/Pleasant Grove) pitched nine innings with four strikeouts. Junior Migacz pitched 6  innings total against the Oles and is third in the MIAC in strikeouts with 71.
