Softball: Macalester Beats Carleton 1-0, Falls in Second Game

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team split a double header with Carleton College today. The Scots won 1-0 and lost 7-4. 
 
In the first game, junior Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) and the defense of the Scots kept the game scoreless against the Knights till the Scots took the lead in the top of the sixth. Before the Macalester run, Migacz threw five of her seven strikeouts of the game.  Sophomore Julia Carpenter (Stensville, Mich./Lakeshore) again played a key role in the Scots offense as she singled on a bunt to get herself on base. Senior Morghan Bean (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine) hit her fourteenth double to advance Carpenter to third. Senior Vivi Gregorich (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) then advanced on a fielder's choice and the Carpenter scored the only run of the game.
 
The Scots took the lead in the second game in the first inning as Carpenter scored off a fielder's choice sac bunt  again from Gregorich. Carelton came back in the bottom of the second to take the lead 2-1.
 
Macalester then took the lead with 4-2 in the top of the third. Bean singled to left field and was sub out for pinch runner Katja McKernan (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) who scored from third of a Kechely walk, with Kechely on first, O'Connor on second and Gregorich on third. Gregorich then advanced on another walk and O'Connor scored as she advanced after F\first year Audrey Meade (Cedar Hills, Utah/Pleasant Grove) was hit by a pitch. While up 4-2, the Knights answered in the bottom of the third with three runs and closed the game out with a run in the fifth and sixth to win 7-4.
 
Junior Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) pitched the entirety of the first game and the last four innings of the second. She had seven strikeouts on the day and is 10-12 on the season, fifth in the MIAC in wins.  
 
The Scots return to action at home against St. Benedict on Wednesday, April 25 beginning at 4:30 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
