Softball: Macalester Loses to MIAC Leaders St. Thomas

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team lost to the MIAC leaders University of St. Thomas today, 9-4 and 17-7.

In the first game against the Tommies went up 7-0 with four runs in the first and three in the second. The Scots came back in the bottom of the fourth with four runs to make it 7-4. With the bases loaded junior Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) hit a three run triple to advance senior Vivi Gregorich (Boulder, Colo./Boulder), first year Kate Lawhead (Battle Ground, Wash./Prairie) and senior Katja McKiernan (Los Angeles, Calif./Piedmont).
 
With Migacz on third, senior Morghan Bean (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine) singled to left field for the Scots fourth run of the inning. The Tommies scored a run in the sixth and seventh to end the game 9-4.
 
The second game of the doubleheader started off with a Tommie run in the first. The Scots answered with five runs in the bottom of the second. With first year Audrey Meade (Cedar Hills, Utah/Pleasant Grove) on first and first year Kate Bond (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul) on second, junior Claire O'Connor (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) hit a single to center field to load the bases. With Gregorich at bat, she hit a two-run double to make it 2-1.
 
With Gregorich on second and O'Connor on third, sophomore Julia Carpenter (Stensville, Mich./Lakeshore) hit a homerun to center field to tie the game 5-1.
The Tommies then scored 16 unanswered runs until in the bottom of the seventh where MIgacz again hit a two-run triple to make it 17-7.
 
Migacz pitched 11 innings total against the Tommies with four strikeouts. She now has 69 strikeouts on the year, third in the MIAC .

The Scots return to action at home against St. Olaf on Sun., April 22 beginning at 1:00 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
