Box Score 2 TUCSON, Ariz. – The Macalester College softball team split on their fourth day of play in Tucson today. The Scots beat the Rochester Institute of Technology, 2-1 in their first game and lost to Cornell College, 5-1 in the afternoon.
Against RIT, Macalester took the lead early in the first inning with sophomore
Julia Carpenter (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore) scoring on a passed ball. After a scoreless second inning, junior pitcher
Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) doubled home senior
Katja McKiernan (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) to make the score 2-0. RIT came back to score a run in the fourth, but Macalester held on to win 2-1. Carpenter leads the team with a .424 batting average, followed by Migacz at .379. Carpenter also leads the team in runs scored (seven) and hits (14) on the season. Migacz went the distance in the circle, allowing one run on six hits and one walk while striking out two in seven innings.
In the second game of the day the Scots went up 1-0 in the first as first year
Kate Lawhead (Battle Ground, Wash./Prairie) doubled to left field, sending Carpenter across home plate. Lawhead has now had a hit in each of the last three games. The Rams scored three runs in the bottom of the first to make the score 3-1, then added two more runs in the sixth while keeping Macalester off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
Going into the final day of play in Arizona, the Scots are now 6-8.
The Scots continue in Tucson, Ariz. against Case Western Reserve beginning at 1:00 p.m. CDT and Buena Vista University at 5:30 p.m. CDT at Lincoln Park on Thursday, Mar. 15.
