Men's Soccer: Scots Sweep Saint Mary's, Win 4-0

ST. PAUL, Minn.- The Macalester College men's soccer team beat Saint Mary's University today to remain in second place in the MIAC. The Scots won today with two conference games to go in the season.

The Scots dominated the Cardinals in the first half with a shot total of nine to Saint Mary's five. With the offensive pressure the Scots first goal of the game came in the 32nd minute as the Scots cleanly passed the ball into the Cardinal's box to be slotted in by first year Ben Wagner (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park). From a direct pass from senior Jamel Benhamida (Faribault, Minn./Shattuck-St.Mary's), Wagner's second goal came as an one-time shot low into the goal.

The teams went into halftime with the Scots up 1-0. The Scots doubled their lead eight minutes into the second half when the Scots made a run down the left flank. Sophomore Floyd Krom (Naaldwijk, Netherlands/UWC-Costa Rica) passed the ball across the box to junior Chris Bajek (Fitchburg, Wis./Madison West). Bajek then firmly passed the ball into the Cardinals net for his second goal of the year.

Macalester then added their third goal to the books as Wagner scored from a pass through the penalty area from Krom, his second assist of the game. The Scots tallied their fourth goal of the night as junior defender Alex Foster (Chicago, Ill./University of Chicago Laboratory) split the Cardinals defense with a quick pass up the middle to sophomore Etienne Chenevert (Baton Rouge, La./Baton Rouge Magnet) who took a touch and firmly shot it into the Saint Mary's goal.

With the 4-0 win, Macalester remains second in the MIAC with conference play closing in and just two more matches to go.

Macalester goes on the road to play St. John's University on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 4:00 p.m. in Collegeville, Minn.
