Men's Soccer: Scots Secure Overtime Win Against Bethel

ST. PAUL, Minn.- The Macalester College men's soccer team won in double overtime against  Bethel University 2-1, tonight. The Scots are now 5-1-1 in conference play.

In the first half of the game, the play was even on both ends with the Scots and Royals each having clear scoring chances. Macalester had five shots on goal, including one on target from junior Nick Moore (Georgetown, Mass./Governor's Academy) in the fifteenth minute. But neither team were able to finish and the score at half was 0-0.

Then just six minutes into the second half the Scots gave up a foul at their own 30-yard line. The Royals free-kick sailed into the Scots box, where it bounced around and was but into the back of the net off a Bethel header.

Down 1-0, the Scots pressed hard to find a tying goal. Then in the 76th minute senior defender Logan Harper (Westwood, Mass./St. Mark's School) stepped up to take a free kick just outside the Royals eighteen. Harper took the kick left footed and slotted it in the Royals' right corner to tie the game 1-1. The tying goal was Harper's third of the season.

At 1-1, neither team were able to break the deadlock before regular time expired and the game went into overtime.

After a scoreless first overtime period, Macalester senior Jamel Benhamida (Faribault, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's) first-time volleyed a rebounded shot inside the Royals six-yard box into the back of Bethels' net for his third goal of the season. The goal ended the game and secured the Scots fifth conference win.

Macalester returns to play at away on Monday, Oct. 15, against at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa at 7:00 p.m.
