ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's soccer team surrendered a pair of second-half goals to fall to Hamline University, 2-1 Tuesday afternoon at Macalester Stadium. The game was the first MIAC contest of the season for both teams. The Scots drop to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference, while the Pipers improve to 3-1-1, 1-0 MIAC.
Midway through the first half, a back-pass violation by Hamline gave Macalester an indirect free kick 10 yards from the goal. First year
Kate Bond (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) touched the ball to junior forward
Jaime Hasama (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Peninsula), who blasted a shot into the upper half of the goal for a 1-0 lead. The Scots took 12 shots in the first half and put five on goal, compared to four for the Pipers.
Seven minutes into the second half, Hamline pulled even with a goal by Kaley Roberts from 20 yards out. Then in the 60th minute, Ellie Baxter headed home a corner kick from Alicia Williams for a 2-1 Pipers lead. With time running down, a header by junior defender
Mia Stripp (Eugene, Ore./South Eugene) was tipped by goalkeeper Kat Armstrong to preserve the one-goal edge. A free kick and a corner kick in the final two minutes did not produce the game-tying goal for Macalester, which saw its two-game winning streak come to an end.
Senior goalkeeper
Rachel Wilson-King (Tucson, Ariz./St. Gregory College Prep School) made four saves in 65 minutes, while senior goalkeeper
Emma Toomer (Leesburg, Va./Loudon County) played the first 25 minutes of the second half. Armstrong finished with seven saves, as the Scots held a 15-7 advantage in shots for the game.
Macalester continues MIAC play with a game at St. Catherine on Saturday, Sept. 16. The match kicks off at 1:00 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
