Volleyball: Macalester Begins New Era with Split at St. Olaf/Carleton Tourney

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Macalester College volleyball team opened the 2017 season with a split at the St. Olaf/Carleton Tournament on Friday at St. Olaf. The results, which included a win over Bethany Lutheran and a loss to Carroll, are the Scots' first under new head coach Sarah Graves '04.

In the day's first match, Macalester dropped the first set to the Vikings before eventually winning in four sets, 20-25, 25-22, 26-24, 25-17. Senior outside hitter Clara Baumann (Wausau, Wis./Wausau East) led all players with 19 kills against just three errors in 40 attempts for a hitting percentage of .400. She also notched a match-best 19 digs. Senior outside hitter India Medaris (Napa, Calif./Justin Siena) tallied 14 kills, nine digs and four total blocks in a solid all-around effort. Junior setter Emily Bowler (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay) delivered 40 assists and seven digs, while first year middle hitter Sofia Parmelee (Tenafly, N.J./Tenafly) had five total blocks in her first collegiate match.

Although the Scots fell to Carroll, 20-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-23, Baumann turned in another standout performance. She registered her second double-double with 16 kills and 11 digs to lead Macalester in both categories. Medaris added nine kills and six digs, while first year defensive specialist Abrielle Dillon (Brown Deer, Wis./University School of Milwaukee) had nine digs.

The Scots continue play at the St. Olaf/Carleton Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 2 with matches at Carleton against UW-River Falls at 3:00 p.m. and Crown College at 7:00 p.m.
