ST. PAUL, Minn. – Macalester College men's soccer coach
Gregg Olson welcomes nine incoming student-athletes to the men's soccer program as a part of the Class of 2021. The class joins 27 returning players from last year's squad that went 13-4-3 and advanced to the finals of the MIAC Playoffs.
"The staff has put in a lot of work with this class," Olson said. "The assistant coaches deserve a lot of credit for their time and dedication in the recruitment process. We are excited to see how quickly these nine young men fit into our system of play. And, we fully expect that a few will make an immediate push for playing time."
Over the past three seasons, the Scots have compiled a record of 38-12-10, made three appearances in the MIAC Playoffs and qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2015.
"The 2021 class will help fill the void left by graduation and ensure success is maintained both on and off the field during their time at Macalester," Olson said. "The staff is thrilled by how the class has come together as there is a great mixture of leaders, students, and athletes."
The team reports to campus on Aug. 18 in preparation for the 2017 season. Here's a look at each incoming player.
Robert Anigbogu
Saint Paul, Minn. (North Saint Paul High School)
St. Croix 1999 Academy
- Two time USYS National Championship participant.
- MN State High School League Class AA State Champion
Coach Olson on Anigbogu: "Robert is the type of student-athlete that any coach would want in their program. He is kind hearted, communicates very well, has great athletic ability, and his best moments as a player are ahead of him still."
Shawn Cavasos
Gulf Breeze, Fla. (Gulf Breeze High School)
Gulf Coast Texans 98/99
- National Premier League-GSPL National Finalist
- Gulf Breeze HS/Gulf Coast Texans Captain
- Four Year letter winner for Gulf Breeze boys soccer
Coach Olson on Cavasos: "Shawn is a very high level player. He was recruited by some of the best Division I soccer programs. He can contribute anywhere up the middle of the field either as a center back or a holding midfielder. Shawn's intelligence will be on display both on the field and off."
Etienne Chenevert
Baton Rouge, La. (Baton Rouge Magnet High School)
Baton Rouge SC/Cajun SC Alliance
USSF Region III ODP
- Louisiana High School Soccer All-State First Team
- USSF ODP Regional Tournament Participant
Coach Olson on Chenevert: "Etienne is the most versatile soccer player in the class. He played forward for the Region III ODP team, has played out wide and at outside back with his club team, and played center midfield for his high school team. Etienne is technical and clever with the ball. We are excited to see where he is going to fit in our system of play."
Cade Fink
Plainfield, Ill. (Plainfield North High School)
Chicago Fire Juniors NPL
USSF Region II ODP '99
- 2x All-Southwest Prairie Conference First Team
- Holder of 6 Individual GK Awards at Plainfield North HS
- 3x USYS Region II Regional Championship participant
- 1x USYS National Championship participant
Coach Olson on Fink: "Cade is a complete GK'er. He has good technique, competes at a high level, commands his area, and has a great personality. His team has been one of the best in the Midwest for years. And, this year they have already qualified for the National Championships due to their success in the NPL."
Aidan Keefe
Rockford, Ill. (Boylan Catholic High School)
Rockford Raptors
Coach Olson on Keefe: "In some ways it feels like we have been recruiting Aidan for 3 years. He has expressed interest in Mac since he was playing with the Chicago Sockers and as he continued to develop, the coaching staff became progressively more and more impressed with his game. We expect Aidan to fight for time anywhere across the back line. He is a very good defender, but his best attribute is his distribution on the ball."
Floyd Krom
Naaldwijk, Netherlands (United World College, Costa Rica)
RKVV Westlandia U19
Coach Olson on Krom: "Floyd could be the surprise of the class. The staff has only seen him play on video and we were really impressed. He has played against some of the best youth talent in the Netherlands over the past year while playing in the U19 youth eredivisie. Like Etienne, he's played multiple positions including center back and forward."
Theo Nsereko
Johnston, Iowa (Johnston High School)
Sporting Iowa '98
USSF Region II ODP '98
- 1x All-Western Division First Team
- 1x All-Central Iowa Metro League First Team
- 2014 US Club Regionals participant
- 2015 National ODP runner-up
Coach Olson on Nsereko: "Theo had some really good academic and soccer options in front of him for college. With his late commitment to Mac, he rounds out the class and adds an attacking element that we needed to have with this class."
Max Starks
Green Bay, Wis. (Preble High School)
FC Wisconsin North 98/99
- 2x All-Fox River Classic Conference First Team
- 2x All-Bay Area (WI) First Team
- 2016 Preble HS Offensive MVP
Coach Olson on Starks: "Max is first and foremost a great young man. He has played outside back and in attacking wide positions for both his club and high school teams. Max is a very determined student-athlete and I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the mix with the first team at some point early in his career."
Jonnie Winkler
Mount Horeb, Wis. (Mount Horeb High School)
Madison 56'ers '99 Red
- 2x All-Badger North Conference First Team
- 2x All-Madison Area Prep Sports Second Team
- 2016 Wisconsin All-State Honorable Mention
- 2016 Mount Horeb Varsity Most Dedicated
- 2016 Mount Horeb WIAA Scholar Athlete
- 2016 WIAA State Masonic All-Star
- 2015 WIAA Division 3 State Champion
- 2016 Mount Horeb Varsity Captain
Coach Olson on Winkler: "Jonnie is a strong and powerful athlete. He is one of the best downhill ski racers in the U.S. He attacks every situation he encounters on the field. We expect him to play wide and work to prove himself in the MIAC very quickly."
