Men’s Soccer: Scots’ Season Ends with Loss to No. 8 Wheaton in NCAA Tournament

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team saw its run in the NCAA Division III Tournament come to an end with a 1-0 defeat to eighth-ranked Wheaton College in the third round at St. Olaf's Rolf Mellby Field. The loss was the first since Oct. 4 for the Scots, who finish the season with a record of 17-5. The Lyons (17-1-4) advance to the quarterfinals against the host Oles on Sunday, Nov. 23.

The only goal of the game came in the 24th minute. Aiden Doyle took a free kick from 25 yards out that deflected off a defender and into the left side of the goal. The Scots controlled play the rest of the way looking for the equalizer, as the Lyons packed the area around their goal. A shot by first year midfielder Milan Shah (Chicago, Ill./Francis W. Parker) was cleared by a defender in the 38th minute. In the second half, a header by senior defender Nick Kent (St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park) off a free kick was saved by Wheaton goalkeeper Nick Phinney in the 67th minute. Despite having the bulk of the possession, Macalester was unable to score, ending a 10-game winning streak.

First year goalkeeper Justin Ratner (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) made two saves for Macalester, and Phinney also had two saves, as the Scots held a 12-5 advantage in shots taken.

The result ends a historical season for the Scots, whose 17 victories are the second-most in the program's history behind only the 1998 squad that went 18-4. Earlier this month, Macalester won the MIAC Playoffs with a 4-1 victory over fourth-ranked St. Olaf, the first MIAC Playoff title for the Scots since 2009. Playing in their last game as a Scot were Kent, Alex Beck-Ruiz (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd), Parker Etzbach (Wilton, Conn./Wooster School), Tanguy Lesegretain (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills), Ondieki Maina (Kensington, Calif./El Cerrito), and Daniel Romanenko (Los Angeles, Calif./Geffen Academy at UCLA). The seniors compiled a record of 48-20-8 during their four years at Macalester.
