ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team opens play at the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship tonight at the Midwest Regional, hosted by UW-Whitewater. The Scots (26-15) will face Concordia University Chicago (29-11) at 7:45 p.m. at Prucha Field.
This is the first NCAA Tournament appearance for Macalester, which won the MIAC Playoffs last weekend to receive the league's automatic bid. The Scots boast five All-MIAC players in senior pitcher
Dylan Edwards-Gaherty (New York, N.Y./American Studies), senior infielder
Quentin Stuart (Nashville, Ind./Indiana Academy), junior outfielder
Alex Baretta (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic), junior catcher
Collin Brantner (Farmington, Conn./Kingswood Oxford), and first year pitcher
Matthew Plisko (Alpharetta, Ga./Pace Academy). Head coach
Matt Parrington was selected the MIAC Coach of the Year, while sophomore catcher
Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) made the All-Defensive Team.
Concordia Chicago, located in River Forest, Ill., won the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference regular-season and tournament titles. The Cougars dominated the league with an 18-2 record, then won three straight games at the NACC Tournament to capture their fifth consecutive title. Infielder Bryan VanDuser was named the NACC Position Player of the Year after batting .413 with 12 doubles, four home runs and 29 runs batted in. He also stole 16 bases, as Concordia averaged 2.8 stolen bases a game this season. The Cougars' top starting pitcher is Keaton Connor, who was 5-3 with an earned run average of 3.49.
The winner of tonight's game will play at 7:45 p.m. on Friday, with the loser playing an elimination game at 1:15 p.m. on Friday.
