ST. PAUL, Minn. – In the midst of a heavy downpour, the Macalester men's cross country team competed in a dual meet against St. Thomas for the Summit Cup. The Scots battled through the mud around Pike Island, falling to the #8 regionally ranked Tommies by 19 points (20-39).
The top five runners for the Scots finished in the top 20, with sophomore Spencer Grant (Portland, Ore./Jesuit), senior Lachlan Hinwood (Colfax, Wis./Colfax) and sophomore Chris Boranian (Oakland, Calif./Head-Royce School) managing to separate the top 5 Tommies. The overall meet winner was Allen-Michael Burback of St. Thomas in 21:37.3.
Grant led the Scots in the four mile race finishing in 4th place with a time of 21:44.7 followed close behind by Hinwood who placed 5th with a time of 21:48.7. Boranian, third for the Scots, crossed the line in 7th with a time of 22:03.1.
Rounding out Mac's scoring pack were sophomore Mac Doherty (Madison, Wis. / Madison East) posting a time of 22:34.3 for 18th place overall, followed by first year Henry Harper (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park) who crossed the line in 22:35.9 for 19th place.
"It was a classic old school dual meet, held on Pike Island, in the pouring rain, with mud-spattered athletes sprinting to the finish line in the middle of the woods. We met our goal of breaking up the St. Thomas top 5, and got extra upside performances from our sophomores," said head coach Matt Haugen.
The team will compete next on Saturday, September 24 at the University of Minnesota's Roy Griak Invitational in Falcon Heights, Minnesota.
