Softball: Macalester Loses Twice to No. 13 St. Catherine

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team lost a pair of MIAC games to 13th-ranked St. Catherine, 8-0 and 10-5 on Friday at the Macalester Softball Complex. The results give the Scots a 13-25 record on the season, including a 6-14 mark in conference play. The Wildcats improve to 27-4, 14-4 MIAC.

St. Catherine scored single runs in the first and fourth innings of Game 1 before exploding for six runs in the top of the fifth. The outburst included a two-run homer by Ashley Sis. Macalester managed just three hits off Wildcats' starter Krista Flugstad, who struck out six in four innings for the win. Junior Nikki Caicedo (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) and sophomores Morghan Bean (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine) and Katja McKiernan (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) had the Macalester hits.

In the second game, St. Catherine built a commanding 9-0 lead through the first four innings, with Megan Lindenfelser and Sammie Galvez homering in a four-run fourth inning. But the Scots broke through in the bottom of the fourth, scoring five runs to make the score 9-5. Sophomores Natalie Platt (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) and G.G. Gunther (San Francisco, Calif./Lowell) each drove in runs in the inning. That's as close as Macalester would get, as the Wildcats added an insurance run in the seventh to lead 10-5. Bean and Platt delivered two hits apiece for the Scots.

The doubleheader marked the final home games for senior Abby Cox (Fort Worth, Texas/Country Day).

Macalester ends the 2016 season with a MIAC twinbill on Saturday, Apr. 30 at St. Olaf. The first game starts at 1:00 p.m. in Northfield, Minn.
