Softball: Macalester Closes Season at St. Olaf

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team wrapped up the 2016 campaign with two losses at St. Olaf in a MIAC doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Mabel Shirley Field. The Scots, who fell, 10-2 and 5-2, end their season at 13-27 overall and 6-16 in league play. The Oles improve to 13-16, 8-12 MIAC.

In Game 1, St. Olaf put five runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning, then added two more in the second to lead 7-0. Senior Abby Cox (Fort Worth, Texas/Country Day), who was playing in her final doubleheader for the Scots, hit a solo home run in the fourth. Junior Nikki Caicedo (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) followed suit with a homer in the fifth to make the score 7-2. The Oles put the game away with three runs in the fifth, including a two-run homer by Emily Carr, for a 10-2 advantage.

Caicedo put Macalester on top early in the second game with a double that plated Cox in the top of the first. St. Olaf tied the score with a run in the second, then two runs apiece in the fourth and fifth innings made it a 5-1 game. Caicedo responded with her second home run of the day, a solo shot in the sixth to cut the deficit to three, 5-2. The Scots had a baserunner in the sixth and seventh innings but did not score, as the Oles clinched the sweep.

Caicedo delivered two hits and Cox also had a hit in the loss. Sophomore Morghan Bean (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine) started in the circle and allowed three runs on five hits in four innings for Macalester. Cox concludes her career with 143 hits, 15 home runs and 81 runs batted in.
