ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team hosted the College of Saint Benedict in Saturday afternoon play at the MAC Softball Complex. The Scots put together an impressive two games, upsetting the sixth best team in the MIAC with a 4-3 game one victory and a 7-5 win in game two. Macalester improves to 13-23 overall and 6-12 in conference games. St. Ben's falls to 19-15 this year and 7-9 in MIAC play.
GAME ONE: Macalester 4, St. Ben's 3
MIAC home run leader,
Morghan Bean (Muscatine, Iowa / Muscatine) connected on her seventh home run of the year to give the Scots a 2-0 lead to start the game.
After two and a half innings of play, however, the Blazers took a 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the third inning,
Abby Cox (Fort Worth, Texas / Country Day) and
G.G. Gunther (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell) led off with back-to-back singles. It was
Morghan Bean who drove in another run in the bottom of the third to tie the score up at three all.
In the bottom of the fifth inning,
Rachel Wilson-King (Tucson, Ariz. / St. Gregory College Prep) led off with a single to right.
G.G. Gunther brought her home after crushing her third triple this year and tacking on a go-ahead RBI. The Scots held on to the 4-3 lead to secure the game one win.
Both teams collected six hits in the game. Gunther led the way going two for three at the plate. Bean recorded one hit and a team-best three RBI's.
First year
Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill. / McHenry West) started in the circle and pitched the complete seven innings. She earned her ninth win this season after allowing six hits, two earned runs and striking out three.
GAME TWO: Macalester 7, St. Ben's 5
Macalester kept the momentum heading into game two as they scored three runs in the bottom half of the first when
Abby Cox connected on a leadoff single and advanced to second on a
Morghan Bean walk. Catcher
Nikki Caicedo (Clinton Township, Mich. / Chippewa Valley) doubled to score Cox and move Bean to third.
Natalie Platt (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) followed with a two-RBI single through the left side.
The Scots scored once more in the second and three runs in the fourth as the result of three RBI's from hot-hitting
Morghan Bean.
The Blazers fought back, minimizing the scoring gap to three after six innings of play (7-4). They made another run in the top of the seventh, scoring once but leaving the tying runs on base.
Migacz started on the mound yet again and threw four innings before being relieved by Bean. Bean allowed one earned run and three hits, but was replaced by Migacz to finish out the seventh. Sophie earned her tenth win, her record moving to 10-10 this season.
Senior
Abby Cox led the offensive effort going three for four at the plate. Bean recorded two hits and three RBI's, her total runs batted in totaling six today. Platt added two hits and two RBI's.
