WINONA, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team dropped a pair of games at Saint Mary's University, 13-7 and 6-4 Saturday at Max Molock Field. The Scots are now 14-13 overall and 4-10 in conference play, while the Cardinals improve to 20-12-1, 8-6 MIAC.
In the first game, Macalester answered a run by Saint Mary's in the top of the first with one of its own on a double by sophomore
Collin Brantner (Farmington, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) that plated sophomore
Ben Castagnetti (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) in the bottom of the first. But the Cardinals scored seven straight runs over the next two innings to take a commanding 8-1 lead. The Scots responded with four runs in the third, sparked by a solo home run from sophomore
Alex Baretta (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic). Junior
Quentin Stuart (Nashville, Ind./Indiana Academy) delivered a two-run double and then scored on a grounder by senior
Sam Berk (Miami, Fla./Palmer Trinity School) in the third. Then in the fourth, Stuart plated Baretta with a sacrifice fly to make the score 8-6 Saint Mary's.
The Cardinals pushed the lead back to seven, scoring two runs in the sixth and three runs in the seventh for a 13-6 advantage. Berk singled home Stuart in the bottom of the seventh to close out the scoring. Baretta, Castagnetti and Stuart each had two hits, with Stuart driving in three runs.
Saint Mary's took control of Game 2 with a run in the second inning and a two-run triple by Ben Buerkle in the third for a 3-0 lead. Another run in the fifth and a two-run double from Cale Pieczynski in the seventh made the score 6-0 Cardinals. Macalester didn't get on the board until the bottom of the ninth. First year
Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) hit a two-run double and later scored on a grounder from senior
Nick Sia (Crofton, Md./South River). Berk also came home on a grounder by first year
Jared Abelson (Herndon, Va./South Lakes). With Sia on base and the tying run at the plate with one out, the Scots were unable to get the key hit, stranding Sia at second.
Low finished with two hits, a run and two runs batted in, while Stuart also had two hits. Stuart finished the day 4-for-7 with three doubles, three runs and three RBIs.
Macalester hosts MIAC foe Bethel University in the final home contests of the season on Tuesday, Apr. 26. The first game of the conference doubleheader starts at 2:30 p.m. at Nicholson Field.
