Softball: Macalester Drops Two vs. Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Macalester College softball team hosted Hamline University in Friday night action at the Macalester Softball Complex. The Scots fell to the Pipers, 8-2 in game one and went down 7-5 in a well-fought game two. Macalester is now 11-23 overall and 4-12 in the MIAC. Hamline improves to 18-12 this season, 11-5 in conference play to tie for fourth place in the standings.

Game One: Hamline 8, Macalester 2

The Pipers held Macalester to just six hits in the first game, finishing with 13 of their own. Hamline scored three runs in the top of the second inning, but the Scots pushed back in the bottom of the third when Katja McKiernan (Los Angeles, Calif. / Marymount) walked and was hit home when Morghan Bean (Muscatine, Iowa / Muscatine) connected on her sixth home run this season to bring the Scots within one. Bean's six homers put her on top of the MIAC standings for home runs this season. Unfortunately, Macalester's offense was shut down in the final four innings while Hamline managed to get five more runs on the board.

Bean led the way with two hits in the game. Abby Cox (Fort Worth, Texas / Country Day), Logan Tootle (Kansas City, Mo. / Lee's Summit North), Nikki Caicedo (Clinton Township, Mich. / Chippewa Valley) and Vivi Gregorich (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) each added one.

Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill. / McHenry West) started in the circle and pitched four innings before being relieved by Bean. Migacz allowed seven hits and five runs. She struck out one in the loss. Bean finished out the final three innings, allowing six hits and three runs. She struck out two.

Game Two: Hamline 7, Macalester 5

Hamline took a 3-0 lead to start off game two before Macalester made a run. The Scots scored once in the bottom of the third and four more in the bottom of the fourth to pull within one (6-5). The Pipers homered in the top of six to add a security run and close out a final 7-5 game two.

This time Macalester put together nine hits to Hamline's 12. Abby Cox, G.G. Gunther (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell) and Vivi Gregorich led the way, each producing two. Cox had a team-best two RBI's. Bean, Rachel Wilson-King (Tucson, Ariz. / St. Gregory College Prep), Natalie Platt (Boulder, Colo. / Boulder) and McKiernan added one.

Migacz, Bean and Tootle all saw action on the mound in game two. Migacz made the start and threw 2.1 innings allowing six hits and three runs before being relieved by Bean. Bean finished out the third and was replaced by Tootle who pitched the remaining four innings. Migacz was credited with the loss, her record moving to 8-10 on the year.

Macalester will return to action on Saturday, Apr. 23 when they host Saint Benedict in MIAC play. The doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. at the Macalester Softball Complex. Check the schedule for links to live stats and video.
