ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Macalester College softball team took on No. 13 ranked University of St. Thomas Wednesday evening at South Field. After falling in a 2-0 game one, the Scots came back to upset the conference leader, 6-5 in a history-making game two victory. With the split, Macalester moves to 11-21 overall, 4-10 in the MIAC. St. Thomas is now 27-5 overall and 14-2 in conference play.

Game One: St. Thomas 2, Macalester 0

The Tommies held Macalester to just one hit in the first game as they finished with seven. With no fielding errors by either team, St. Thomas scored one run in both the third and sixth innings to ride out a 2-0 victory.

G.G. Gunther (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell) recorded the Scots' only hit in the game. Gunther is batting .392 this season, just trailing senior Abby Cox (Fort Worth, Texas / Country Day) for the highest average.

Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill. / McHenry West) started on the mound and pitched the complete seven innings. Migacz allowed seven hits, walked two and struck out two in the loss. UST's Anderson improved to 18-3 on the mound this year after the one-hit shutout.

Game Two: Macalester 6, St. Thomas 5

The Scots scored early in game two, getting one run on the board in the first inning after Claire O'Connor (Piedmont, Calif. / Piedmont) connected on an RBI single up the middle to score Abby Cox. The Tommies battled back and took a 4-1 lead after three innings of play.

In the top of the fifth inning, Morghan Bean (Muscatine, Iowa / Muscatine) jump started the comeback with a two-run homer, her fifth home run this season, and drove Macalester within one run.

The Scots trailed 5-3 heading into the final inning of play. Rachel Wilson-King (Tucson, Ariz. / St. Gregory College Prep) led the inning off with a walk. Cox followed with a single down the right field line to advance Vivi Gregorich (Boulder, Colo. / Boulder) who pinch ran for Wilson-King. Hot-hitting G.G. Gunther stepped up and made contact on an RBI double to right center to pull the Scots within one (5-4).

It was Morghan Bean who rose to the occasion yet again, this time singling to center field to drive in two runs and give the Scots a 6-5 lead.

Defensively, Macalester held St. Thomas in the bottom of the seventh to take down the No. 13 ranked Tommies.

Migacz pitched another complete game, this time coming out on top. She allowed 11 hits, walked just one batter and struck out five in her eighth win this season.
