ST. PETER, Minn. -- The Macalester College softball team took on Gustavus Adolphus in a Thursday night MIAC doubleheader. The Scots dropped a 4-2 decision in game one and came up short, 8-7 in an eight-inning game two battle. Macalester falls to 9-17 overall and 2-6 in conference play. Gustavus improves to 16-8 this season, 7-3 in the MIAC.
Game One: Gustavus 4, Macalester 2
The Gusties were first to score in game one, scoring once in the bottom of the third to take the first lead. They added one more run in the bottom of the fifth to go up 2-0. Macalester put together a sixth-inning offensive effort after
Natalie Platt (Boulder, Colo. / Boulder) drew a leadoff walk and
G.G. Gunther (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell) singled to get on.
Morghan Bean (Muscatine, Iowa / Muscatine) came through with a big two-RBI double to score Platt and Gunther and tie the game at 2-2.
Gustavus battled back scoring two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning and held the Scots scoreless to take home a 4-2 win. Macalester collected four hits in the game, the Gusties finished with nine.
Bean pitched 4.1 innings for the Scots, allowing four hits and one earned run in the loss. She struck out three. First year
Makaya Resner (Missoula, Mont. / Loyola Sacred Heart) threw 1.2 innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs.
Game Two: Gustavus 8, Macalester 7 (8 innings)
Macalester was quick to get the offense going in game two, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning sparked by a leadoff triple from
Abby Cox (Fort Worth, Texas / Country Day).
Morghan Bean and
Claire O'Connor (Piedmont, Calif. / Piedmont) each drove in a run and junior
Nikki Caicedo (Clinton Township, Mich. / Chippewa Valley) singled to drive in two.
The Gusties earned two runs back in the bottom half of the inning and took the first lead of the game after adding three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Gustavus led 6-4 heading into the seventh inning when Macalester put together three runs on a
G.G. Gunther RBI double followed by a two-run homer from
Morghan Bean. With a 7-6 lead heading into the final half inning of play, the Gusties managed to tie it up and carried the momentum into the bottom half of the eighth to complete the sweep with an 8-7 win.
Macalester put together seven hits in the game to the Gusties' 10, but were hurt by five defensive errors.
Bean led the way going two for four at the plate with three RBI's.
G.G. Gunther has increased her consecutive game hitting streak to six as she leads the Scots with a .398 average.
Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill. / McHenry West) started on the mound for Macalester and threw 3.1 innings allowing five hits and five runs before being relieved by Bean. Bean finished out the contest, giving up five hits and two earned runs in her fourth loss of the year.
The Scots will return to action on Saturday, Apr. 16 when they host Carleton College at the Macalester Softball Complex. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. with a Senior Day presentation before the first pitch. The Scots will honor senior outfielder
