Softball: Macalester Falls in Doubleheader to Bethel

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Macalester College softball team was finally able to play at home at the Macalester Softball Complex on Wednesday evening when they hosted a pair of MIAC games against Bethel University. After a close game one, the Royals broke it open in the 7th inning to secure a 10-1 win. The Scots led in game two until the Royals took over in the 5th inning, finishing with a 3-2 win. Macalester falls to 9-15 overall, 2-4 in conference play. Bethel improves to 8-12 this season, 3-3 in the MIAC.

Game One: Bethel 10, Macalester 1

It was a tough defensive outing for Macalester in game one as the Scots were plagued by five errors in the field, helping Bethel ease to victory. The Royals scored four runs in the top of the second inning to take an initial lead. Macalester earned one run back in the bottom of the 4th inning on an RBI sac fly by sophomore Morghan Bean (Muscatine, Iowa / Muscatine). Bean's hit scored G.G. Gunther (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell) who reached on a well hit single to right field.

Bethel's momentum continued late in the game as they scored once in the 6th and five runs in the 7th inning. They put together 10 runs on 10 hits. Macalester recorded four hits in the game.

First year Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill. / McHenry West) started in the circle for the Scots, throwing the complete seven innings. Migacz allowed eight earned runs and struck out four in the loss. Bethel's Lindsay Edeen was credited with the win.

Game Two: Bethel 3, Macalester 2

Macalester fought back to start game two, scoring two quick runs in the bottom of the first inning sparked by a leadoff double by senior Abby Cox (Fort Worth, Texas / Country Day). Gunther followed up with a bunt single and aggressive base running put the Scots in scoring position. Bean laid down a suicide squeeze that turned into an RBI bunt single to score the first run. First year Claire O'Connor (Piedmont, Calif. / Piedmont) drove in the second run on a sacrifice fly to center.

Bethel earned one run back in the top of the third inning before scoring two runs in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. The Royals held the Scots scoreless in six straight innings to secure the sweep.

Macalester finished with four hits to Bethel's eight. Bean started in the circle for the Scots, throwing 4.2 innings. She allowed six hits and struck out four in the loss. Bean was relieved by Migacz who threw the remaining 2.1 innings. She allowed no runs and just two hits.

Macalester will return to action tomorrow when they travel to St. Peter, Minn. to take on Gustavus Adolphus in a pair of MIAC games. The doubleheader will begin at 3:30 p.m. Check the Macalester softball schedule for links to live stats and video.
