Softball: Macalester Wins 2-1 and Falls 5-3 at Concordia

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Macalester College softball team traveled to Moorhead, Minn. to compete in Sunday afternoon MIAC softball action. G.G. Gunther (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell) had a strong outing for the Scots, lifting Macalester to a 2-1 victory in game one after connecting on a two run homerun. The win ended an eight game winning streak for the Cobbers. Gunther went two for two at the plate in the Scots' 5-3 game two loss. Macalester advances to 9-13 overall, 2-2 in conference action. Concordia moves to 14-6 overall and 1-1 in MIAC play.

Game One: Macalester 2, Concordia 1

Macalester took an early lead in game one, scoring both runs in the top of the first inning. Senior outfielder Abby Cox (Fort Worth, Texas / Country Day) led off with a double to right center. Gunther followed with her first homerun of the season, crushing the ball to center field to score Cox.

The Scots held off the Cobers until the bottom of the seventh inning when Concordia attempted a late comeback. They scored one run on two hits before catcher Nikki Caicedo (Clinton Township, Mich. / Chippewa Valley) picked off Concordia's Taylor Rasmussen at second base.

First year Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill. / McHenry West) started on the mound for the Scots and threw seven complete innings, allowing just three hits. She struck out 11 and walked none to record her sixth win of the season.

Macalester finished with five hits to Concordia's three. Cox went two for three at the plate.

Game Two: Concordia 5, Macalester 3

Concordia fought back to start game two, scoring four runs in the first inning on five hits and one Macalester error. The Scots closed the gap in innings three and five when they scored three runs to cut the deficit to one. The Cobbers scored once more in the bottom of five and held onto a 5-3 final victory.

Macalester had eight hits to Concordia's 10. Gunther went two for two at the plate with two RBI's and two walks. Morghan Bean (Muscatine, Iowa / Muscatine) also added two hits.

First year Makaya Resner (Missoula, Mont. / Loyola Sacred Heart) started on the mound. Resner pitched one inning, struck out two and allowed one earned run in the loss. Resner was relieved by Bean who finished out the game, throwing five innings. She allowed five hits, one run and struck out three.

Macalester will return to action on Wednesday, April 13 when they host Bethel University. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 4:30 p.m.
