ROCHESTER, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team competed in the Rochester Dome Tournament on Saturday. The Scots defeated Martin Luther College, 4-2 in game one and fell to Luther College, 3-1 in game two. With the split, Macalester advances to 3-1 overall this season.
Game One: Macalester 4, Martin Luther 2
Macalester took an early lead in Saturday's first game after
Nikki Caicedo (Clinton Township, Mich. / Chippewa Valley) doubled to right field to score
Lisa Semro (Cary, Ill. / Cary-Grove). The Scots scored another run off of a Martin Luther error to take a 2-0 lead after just an inning of play.
The Scots gave up one run in each the second and third innings before scoring two more runs in the top of the fifth to take a decisive 4-2 lead. The fifth inning runs were the result of an RBI single by
G.G. Gunther (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell) and an RBI double by Caicedo.
Morghan Bean (Muscatine, Iowa / Muscatine) pitched four complete innings for the Scots, giving up four hits and two runs. She struck out one batter. First year
Makaya Resner (Missoula, Mont. / Loyola Sacred Heart) earned her first collegiate win, pitching the final three innings where she gave up just one hit and no runs. Resner struck out four batters.
Gunther, Semro and Caicedo each had two hits in the game. Macalester finished with nine hits to Martin Luther's five.
Game Two: Luther 3, Macalester 1
In the bottom of the third inning, sophomore
Lisa Semro singled to left field to score
Morghan Bean (Muscatine, Iowa / Muscatine) to take a 1-0 lead.
The game remained scoreless for three straight innings before Luther put together three runs on three hits and one Macalester error to take a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. The Norse retired three straight Macalester batters to close out the win.
Senior outfielder
Abby Cox (Fort Worth, Texas / Country Day) posted two hits in the contest. Semro and Bean each finished with one as Macalester finished with four total. Luther collected six hits.
First year
Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill. / McHenry West) was credited with the loss, pitching seven complete innings and giving up two earned runs. She struck out three.
Macalester will return to action on March 13 as they kick off play at the Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. The Scots are scheduled to play 10 games on the Florida trip and all will be available to follow on Macalester's live stats.
