Softball: Macalester Battles Wesleyan and Concordia (WI), Falling 10-9 and 9-8

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. – The Macalester College softball team opened up the 2016 Spring Games against Wesleyan University. After scoring seven runs in the first inning, the Scots fell in final scoring 10-9 as the Cardinals inched back in the second, third and fourth innings. Macalester fell short in an eight-inning battle in game two, dropping a 9-8 contest to Concordia University (Wis.).

The Scots move to 3-3 overall this season and will continue play at the Spring Games on Monday. They are scheduled to take on Stockton University at 3 p.m. followed by Ripon College at 5. Both games can be followed online at: http://portal.stretchinternet.com/macalester/index.htm

Game One: Wesleyan 10, Macalester 9

The Scots put together seven runs on seven hits in the bottom of the first to take a big lead in today's first game. Morghan Bean (Muscatine, Iowa / Muscatine) crushed a double to left center to score three and spark the offensive run.

Wesleyan didn't back down, scoring two runs in the top of the second and five in the top of the third to tie it up at 7-7. Logan Tootle (Kansas City, Mo. / Lee's Summit North) led off in the bottom of the third. She singled down the right field line and was followed up by Vivi Gregorich (Boulder, Colo./ Boulder) who connected on a high pitch, doubling to center to score Tootle. Abby Cox (Fort Worth, Texas / Country Day) recorded an RBI to end the inning and give the Scots a 9-7 advantage.

The Cardinals scored three more runs in the top of the fourth after putting together three hits and forcing one Macalester error. They held the 10-9 lead to finish out the contest.

Tootle started on the mound for the Scots but was relieved by Bean after 2.2 innings pitched. She gave up 11 hits. Bean pitched 4.1 innings, giving up one hit and three earned runs. She walked five and was credited with her first loss this season.

Bean had an impressive day at the plate, going two for four with three runs batted in. Cox, Tootle and first year Claire O'Connor (Piedmont, Calif. / Piedmont) also each recorded two hits in the contest.

Game Two: Concordia 9, Macalester 8

The Scots got on the board early in game two, scoring one run in the top of the first as Semro was caught stealing second base but allowed G.G. Gunther (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell) to cross the plate at home. The Falcons earned the run back in the bottom half of the inning. Macalester scored one run again in both the second and third innings, but gave up four runs defensively on two Concordia hits.

The Cardinals held a 6-4 advantage heading into the top of the seventh when Semro doubled to right center and was followed by Morghan Bean who crushed a homerun over the left center fence. Macalester held Concordia on the defensive end to send the game into extras.

With international tiebreaker rules in place, O'Connor was placed on second to start the inning. Gregorich reached on a fielder's choice before Abby Cox connected on a hard hit to left field to score both O'Connor and Gregorich and give the Scots an 8-6 lead.

The Cardinals put together three runs on two hits in the bottom half of the inning to close the game out at 9-8.  Both teams recorded 10 hits.

First year pitcher Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill. / McHenry West) started on the mound for the Scots. Migacz struck out five and allowed nine earned runs in the loss.
