CLERMONT, Fla. – The Macalester College softball team continued action at the Spring Games on Monday with games against Stockton University and Ripon College. The Scots fell to Stockton, 12-1 and came back to defeat Ripon in six innings, 14-4. With the split, Macalester moves to 4-4 overall this season.
Game One: Stockton 12, Macalester 1 Stockton put together two runs on two hits and two Macalester errors to gain early momentum in the top of the first inning against the Scots. The Ospreys continued to put pressure on the Macalester defense throughout the game, forcing the Scots into five defensive errors.
Stockton scored two more runs in the second inning, two in the fifth and six runs in the top of the sixth. Macalester's lone run came in the bottom of the third inning when
Natalie Platt (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) doubled to left center, advanced to third on a bunt single by
G.G. Gunther (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell) and was brought home on an RBI ground out by
Lisa Semro (Cary, Ill. / Cary-Grove).
The Scots finished with five hits to Stockton's nine. Gunther led the way, going three for three at the plate. Platt went two for two.
First year pitcher,
Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill. / McHenry West) started in the circle for the Scots, pitching five complete innings. Migacz gave up five hits and two earned runs before being relieved by
Morghan Bean (Muscatine, Iowa / Muscatine) who pitched the final inning.
Game Two: Macalester 14, Ripon 4 The Scots quickly turned things around in game two, scoring 14 runs on nine hits. Macalester's runs were produced in three big innings, with seven of nine RBI's the result of a three-run shot by
Abby Cox (Fort Worth, Texas / Country Day) and a grand slam by
Morghan Bean.
G.G. Gunther put together another three-hit game. She finished the day going six for seven at the plate and now leads Macalester in batting average this season (.483).
Nikki Caicedo (Clinton Township, Mich. / Chippewa Valley) collected two hits and two RBI's.
Logan Tootle (Kansas City, Mo. / Lee's Summit North) got the nod for the Scots and earned her second win this season. She pitched three innings and gave up just one hit and one run. Tootle was relieved by first year,
Makaya Resner (Missoula, Mont. / Loyola Sacred Heart). Resner threw the final three innings, allowing seven hits and three runs.
Macalester will return to action at the Spring Games on Tuesday when they take on Calvin College and Trinity College. Game times are slated for 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. (EST). Live stats will be available at:
