WINTER GARDEN, Fla. – The Macalester College softball team completed play at the 2016 Spring Games on Friday afternoon at Foundation Academy. The Scots fell to Westfield State, 9-5 and dropped a 12-5 game to the University of Southern Maine. Macalester moves to 4-10 overall this season.
Game One: Westfield State 9, Macalester 5 The Scots were first to score in game one, taking a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. Westfield State took charge, scoring eight runs on three hits, three hit by pitches and one Macalester error to gain the lead. The Owls scored one more run in the bottom of the sixth to earn a final 9-5 victory.
The Scots outhit Westfield, nine to five. Both teams were charged with two errors.
Abby Cox (Fort Worth, Texas / Country Day) led the way offensively for Macalester, going three for four at the plate with an RBI. Cox was the Scots' top hitter during the Spring Games. The senior outfielder batted .467 and collected 14 hits in 10 games played.
Makaya Resner (Missoula, Mont. / Loyola Sacred Heart) started in the circle, pitching three solid innings before being relieved by
Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill. / McHenry West). Migacz allowed two hits and three earned runs before Resner returned to finish out the game. Resner gave up three hits but allowed no earned runs. Migazc was credited with the loss.
Game Two: Southern Maine 12, Macalester 5 Southern Maine scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning after gaining momentum from back-to-back Macalester errors. The Huskies scored three times in the first on RBI's produced by walks and once as the result of a hit-by-pitch. They recorded one hit in the inning.
Logan Tootle (Kansas City, Mo. / Lee's Summit North) got the start, but was relieved by
Morghan Bean (Muscatine, Iowa / Muscatine) with one down in the first. Bean finished out the game pitching 5.2 innings and allowing six hits and six earned runs. Tootle was credited with the loss, her record moving to 2-3 this season.
Macalester earned two runs back in the top of the second and scored one run in each of the fourth through sixth innings. Southern Maine didn't let up, finishing with 12 runs. The Scots collected 10 hits to the Huskies' six, but had three errors and walked nine batters.
Cox had another strong performance at the plate, going two for three with two RBI's.
Claire O'Connor (Piedmont, Calif. / Piedmont) also collected two hits.
G.G. Gunther (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell) recorded two RBI's.
Macalester will return to action when they take on the University of Minnesota Morris on March 24 in the Irish Sports Dome (Rosemount, Minn). The doubleheader will begin at 6 p.m.
