Softball: Macalester Sweeps Minnesota-Morris 12-0 and 13-11

ROSEMOUNT, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team took on the University of Minnesota-Morris in Thursday night action at the Irish Sports Dome. The Scots took game one from the Cougars 12-0 in five innings and came from behind to win game two, 13-11. Macalester improves to 6-10 overall this season.
 
Game One: Macalester 12, Minnesota-Morris 0 (Five Innings)
 
The Scots set the tone early in game one, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning as the result of back-to-back RBI's by Lisa Semro (Cary, Ill. / Cary-Grove) and Nikki Caicedo (Clinton Township, Mich. / Chippewa Valley). Macalester put three more runs on the board in the second inning, one in the third and six in the fourth to take a 12-0 lead heading into the top of the fifth.
 
First year pitcher Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill. / McHenry West) started on the mound for Macalester. Migacz threw the complete five-inning game and allowed just two hits to earn the win. She struck out six and walked none.
 
The Scots collected 10 hits in the game and were led by Semro, Caicedo and G. G. Gunther (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell) who each finished with two. Gunther had three RBI's. Abby Cox (Fort Worth, Texas / Country Day), Katja McKiernan (Los Angeles, Calif. / Marymount) and Semro each added two RBI's.
 
Game Two: Macalester 13, Minnesota Morris 11
 
Minnesota-Morris was fighting for a comeback to start game two. The Cougars scored five runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the second to take an 8-0 lead.
 
The Scots didn't let up as they put together five runs on five hits to start the third inning. Macalester added three more runs in the fourth inning and finally took a 9-8 lead in the top of the fifth after Vivi Gregorich (Boulder, Colo./ Boulder) doubled down the right field line to start the inning and was batted in by Abby Cox for the go ahead run.
 
Macalester scored four additional runs in the top of the seventh inning to hold a 13-8 lead with three outs to play. The Cougars kept things exciting; putting together three hits combined with two Macalester errors to get three runs in before falling in a 13-11 final.
 
First year Makaya Resner (Missoula, Mont. / Loyola Sacred Heart) started on the mound, but was relieved early by Migacz. Migacz pitched 6.2 innings and earned her second win of the day. She gave up eight hits, three earned runs and struck out four.
 
Macalester had 18 hits in the game to the Cougars' 12. Lisa Semro led the way offensively, going four for five at the plate with four RBI's. Morghan Bean (Muscatine, Iowa / Muscatine), Natalie Platt (Boulder, Colo. / Boulder) and Gunther each finished with three hits. Platt went a perfect three for three with a walk.
 
Macalester will return to action on Wednesday, March 30 when they take on the University of Northwestern. The away doubleheader is slated for a 4 p.m. start time.
