ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team took on the University of Northwestern in Tuesday night action at UNW's Reynolds Field. The Scots took game one from the Eagles, 4-1 sparked by a three-run homerun by
Nikki Caicedo before falling in game two, 12-3. Macalester moves to 7-11 overall this season. Northwestern is now 5-13 on the year.
Game One: Macalester 4, Northwestern 1 Macalester was the first to score in game one when
Logan Tootle (Kansas City, Mo. / Lee's Summit North) singled to left field to score
Morghan Bean (Muscatine, Iowa / Muscatine).
Nikki Caicedo secured the lead in the top of the sixth when she knocked a three-run homerun over the fence to give the Scots a 4-0 lead. The Eagles earned a run back in the bottom of the sixth, but the late effort wasn't enough as Macalester closed out a 4-1 victory.
The Scots finished with seven hits in the game to Northwestern's six. Tootle led the way for Macalester going two for three at the plate. Caicedo recorded three RBI's.
Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill. / McHenry West) started on the mound and pitched the complete seven innings, giving up just one run. Migacz struck out seven and earned her fourth win of the season.
Game Two: Macalester 3, Northwestern 12 Macalester started strong in game two as Caicedo continued her hot streak at the plate with an RBI single to left field to score
Abby Cox (Fort Worth, Texas / Country Day). Northwestern gained momentum in the next three innings, finishing with a seven run fourth inning to run-rule the Scots. The Eagles' six hits in the productive seven-run inning ended the game after five innings of play.
Both teams finished with nine hits in the game.
Lisa Semro (Cary, Ill. / Cary-Grove) and
Natalie Platt (Boulder, Colo. / Boulder) each recorded two hits in the game.
Logan Tootle pitched 3.2 innings, giving up five hits and six walks. Tootle was credited with the loss, her record falling to 2-4 on the mound this year.
Macalester will return to action on Saturday, April 2 when they kick off MIAC play at Augsburg College. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 12 p.m.
