MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team opened up Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action against Augsburg College Saturday afternoon. The Scots took game one 7-5 before falling in a six-inning game two, 9-0. With the split, Macalester moves to 8-12 overall and 1-1 in conference action. Augsburg is 12-8 overall.
Game One: Macalester 7, Augsburg 5 Macalester took an early lead in game one after scoring one run in the top of the first inning and four more in the top of the third to go up 5-0. First year
Claire O'Connor (Piedmont, Calif. / Piedmont) roped a three RBI double to right center to spark the scoring efforts. The Auggies earned two back in the bottom half of the third to cut the Scots' lead to three.
Macalester added two more runs in the top of the fifth on a two RBI single by
Vivi Gregorich (Boulder, Colo./ Boulder H.S.). Augsburg battled in the final innings, scoring three additional runs before Macalester closed out a final 7-5 victory.
Macalester finished with five hits to Augsburg's eight. The Scots had three errors in the game to the Auggies' two.
Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill. / McHenry West) earned her fourth straight win, her record improving to 5-5 on the mound this year. Migacz pitched seven complete innings and struck out five.
Game Two: Augsburg 9, Macalester 0 (6 innings) Augsburg came out fighting in game two, scoring four runs in the first inning and never backed down. They put together nine hits to the Scots' two in the 9-0, six-inning win.
Macalester committed three errors in the loss.
Abby Cox (Fort Worth, Texas / Country Day) and
Nikki Caicedo (Clinton Township, Mich. / Chippewa Valley) recorded the only hits for Macalester.
Logan Tootle (Kansas City, Mo. / Lee's Summit North) started on the mound, pitching two outs before being relieved by Migacz. Migacz finished out the game, throwing five innings and allowing two earned runs. Tootle was credited with the loss.
Macalester will return to action when they host Bethel University in their home opener on Tuesday, March 5. The doubleheader is slated for a 4:30 p.m. start. Live stats and video will be available.
