CLERMONT, Fla. – The Macalester College softball team continued action at the Spring Games on Thursday, taking on North Central College and Calvin College. The Scots fell to the Cardinals of NCC, 10-4 and dropped a 3-1 game to Calvin. After play, Macalester moves to 4-8 overall this season.
Game One: North Central 10, Macalester 4 Macalester started off strong, scoring a run in the top of the first after
Abby Cox (Fort Worth, Texas / Country Day) singled up the middle and was brought home on a single by G. G. Gunther (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell). The Cardinals made up the deficit in the bottom of one, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first and second innings to take a 6-1 lead after two complete innings.
The Scots put together three runs on three hits in the top of the third to pull within two of North Central, but the Cardinals put up four more runs to pull away for good.
Logan Tootle (Kansas City, Mo. / Lee's Summit North) started in the circle, throwing two innings before being relieved by first year
Makaya Resner (Missoula, Mont. / Loyola Sacred Heart). Resner finished out the game, pitching four innings. She gave up four hits and struck out three. Tootle was credited with the loss, her record moving to 2-2 this year.
The Scots finished with 10 hits to North Central's eight. Cox, Gunther, and Tootle led the way, each collecting two.
Game Two: Calvin 3, Macalester 1 Resner took the mound again to start game two and finished with a solid seven-inning outing. She faced 30 batters, allowed five hits and struck out three. The Scots were unable to get their offense flowing, resulting in a 3-1 loss as Resner moves to 1-1 this year.
All runs were scored in the third inning. Calvin put three on the board in the top half after collecting four hits. The Scots earned one run back in the bottom half of the third on a
Morghan Bean (Muscatine, Iowa / Muscatine) RBI single through the left side.
Both teams finished with five hits and one fielding error.
Rachel Wilson-King (Tucson, Ariz. / St. Gregory College Prep) led the Scots at the plate going two for three.
Macalester will wrap up action at the Spring Games on Friday when they take on Westfield State and the University of Southern Maine. Game times are slated for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. (EST). Live stats will be available at:
