TUCSON, Ariz. – The Macalester College baseball team racked up 22 hits and 17 runs to take two from Southern Vermont on the second day of the Tucson Invitational, held at the Kino Sport Complex. The Scots, who won by the scores of 12-7 and 5-1, improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Mountaineers drop to 3-5.
In the first game, Macalester set the tone early with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomores
Nick McMullen (Payson, Ariz./Payson),
Ben Castagnetti (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and
Chance Carnahan (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View), and first year
Sam Goldberg (North Potomac, Md./Wootton) each delivered RBI singles in the inning. With the Scots leading 5-1 in the third, sophomore
Alex Baretta (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) blasted a three-run home run for an 8-1 lead. Three runs in the fourth and another in the fifth kept Macalester on top to stay, clinching its first win of the 2016 season.
Junior
Dylan Edwards-Gaherty (New York, N.Y./American Studies) started on the mound and allowed three runs on five hits while striking out three in four innings to earn the victory. McMullen and first year

The Scots started the second game as they had the first, scoring four runs in the first inning. Junior
Quentin Stuart (Nashville, Ind./Indiana Academy) hit a two-run home run, first year
Jared Abelson (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) singled home sophomore
Greg Suber (Delaware, Ohio/Rutherford B. Hayes), and junior
Peter Bertel (Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest) came home on an error. In the second inning, sophomore
Collin Brantner (Farmington, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) plated senior
Nick Sia (Crofton, Md./South River) with a single.

Sam Thomas (Kansas City, Mo./Pembroke Hill) did the rest, holding Southern Vermont to just one run on three hits while fanning five and walking three in six innings of work. Junior
