ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Macalester made a late but unsuccessful rally in game one but they carried that momentum into game to earn a split of its doubleheader with Wisconsin-Stout.
Griffen Gallagher struggled on the mound for the Scots in game one but managed to get himself out of trouble on several occassions. However, after giving up four runs, only two of which were earned, on nine hits over five innings of work.
After falling behind, 4-0, Macalester began its comeback when
Nick Mar hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Brendan O'Connor then came onto pitch two scoreless innings to keep the score 4-1.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh inning,
Tom Forster collected his third hit of the game when he lofted a fly ball to the right side of straight away center field, clearing Nicholson Field's 40-foot high fence for his second home run of the game.
One out later and down to the Scots' last strike,
Quentin Stuart crushed a ball to left field for his team-leading fifth home run of the season, cutting the Blue Devils' lead to one run. However, after a
Collin Brantner single, Austin Booher got the final out of the inning to record his third save of the season, preserving UW-Stout's win.
But the Scots carried the momentum they gained at the end of game one into game two as they scored at least three runs in each of the first four innings.
Forster drove in the game's first run with the first of his three doubles in the game and
Sam Berk followed with a two-run home run for a three-run first inning for Macalester.
The hosts put up four runs in the second inning, getting the first two runs across home plate on Forster's second double and he scored on
Quentin Stuart's base hit down the left field line.
Peter Bertel's then doubled home Stuart to give the Scots a 7-0 lead.
In the third inning, two Blue Devil errors lead to three more runs, two of which were unearned, while a four-run fourth, which saw consecutive doubles by
Phillip Stuhr, Forster, Berk and Stuhr, gave Macalester a 14-2 lead.
Sean O'Brien was the recipient of the offensive support. Although he walked five while allowing two hits and two runs through four inning, he continously made pitches in key spots, getting a double play ground ball to get out of one spot while picking off a runner in the third. He would throw just 39 strikes among his 84 pitches but was good enough to earn his second win of the season.
Anson Justi earned his first save by working the final three innings. He needed just six pitches to get out of the fifth inning and nine to get out of the seventh, getting a game-ending double play.
Forster's three doubles in game two capped a 6-for-8 effort on the day in which he drove in five runs, Mar, with a hit in each game, extended his hitting streak to a team season-high nine games.
The Scots will return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action, Wednesday, for a doubleheader versus Hamline. The first pitch at CHS Field is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
