ROSEMOUNT, Minn. – In the Scots' 2015 season-opener played at the Irish Sports Dome, Macalester combined for 28 hits in the pair of victories over Minnesota-Morris. The Cougars were held to just three hits in the series.
Macalester secured a 7-4 win, credited to first year pitcher
Logan Tootle in game one of the doubleheader, and defeated the Cougars 14-0 in a five-inning game two.
With opening day under their belt, the Scots start the season with a 2-0 record and send the Cougars to 0-2, who finished the 2014 season with a 21-17 overall mark.
Game One: MAC 7, UM-Morris 4:Senior
Brittany Ehmann got the nod in game one, throwing a hitless two innings before first year
Logan Tootle was called in.
The Scots were on the board early, scoring one run in the top of the first as
Abby Cox stole home after getting on base with a single to center. Cox would lead Macalester offensively, going a perfect five for five at the plate and recording two RBI's.
Macalester scored one more run in the second and four more in the top of the third after combining for three hits in the inning and an error by the Cougars.
Morris looked to edge the gap, scoring two runs in both the third and sixth innings aided by six walks and two Cougar hits.
Ehmann returned to the game in the bottom of the seventh to close out a 7-4 victory.
In addition to Cox, three Scots finished with dual-hit performances. Shortstop
Saraswati Wilson went two for three at the plate, raking in two RBI's, while first baseman
Hali Englert and center fielder
Lisa Semro finished with two hits apiece.
Game Two: MAC 14, UM-Morris 0:The Scots' offensive momentum came into full force in game two as they combined for 15 hits in just four innings at the plate.
Macalester was led by senior
Miranda Stokes who went four for four at the plate with two homeruns, six RBI's and three runs scored. Stokes also recorded the win on the mound, pitching five complete innings while giving up just one hit, no walks and striking out six.
Macalester put two runs on the board in the first, four in the second and eight in the bottom of the fourth.
Hali Englert recorded three hits in the game, for a five-hit day.
Brittany Ehmann stroked two base hits in the win.
Mariah Essig is credited with the loss for Morris, giving up nine earned runs in three innings pitched.
Macalester will return to action on Wednesday, March 4 as they take on the University of Northwestern in a doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m. in the Irish Sports Dome.
